I worked on Amazon’s Shipping Team where I was involved in many projects including the redesign of their core shipping system, optimizing quality control systems like Auto Check Weight, the release of Harry Potter 7 in England, and the opening of their new fulfillment centers in China.
One particularly interesting project was a big data self-learning system called Auto Check Weight. It measures the weights of millions of packages shipped by Amazon, and then infers the weights of each individual item in the box. It builds a model for the average and variance in weight expected for each item and package, and kicks them out for inspection if they outside our threshold. I optimized the system for performance, cost savings, and improved reporting to management. It saves thousands of incorrect packages per year, saving Amazon over $2M/yr, and improving customer experience.
